Penguins and Blues

Today is Thursday, April 25, 2024.

It’s mid-afternoon, by the time I get around to writing this, today. Been a kind of lazy day, so far. I still have some laundry to fold, but that’s about it.

Today is World Penguin Day. Penguins are adorable, and, frankly, shouldn’t even be possible. But they are, so let’s celebrate them today.

On a sadder note, I learned, today of the death of Mike Pinder, one of the founding members of The Moody Blues, a favorite band of mine from days gone by. Here is a song of his, from the Every Good Boy Deserves Favor album.

And, yes, that album title an acrostic of the lines on the treble clef. Alternately, Every Good Boy Does Fine is used, at times.

Yesterday was a fine day at the library. It wasn’t overly busy, and, oddly, there seemed to be an unusual number of people who showed up returning long overdue books. One person brought back books that she had had since last year. In all these cases, patrons had books that were so overdue that their account had been billed for replacing them. The library hasn’t charged overdue fines in a couple years, but the account gets blocked if an item stays out more than a week past the due date. And, if it stays out more than three weeks past the due date, they are automatically billed for the item, and it is marked “assumed lost.”

But, when they bring them back, as they did yesterday, the bill is wiped out and their account is reactivated. We show a lot of grace there. It’s just unusual for that many people to return “lost” books in one day.

We took a group picture at the beginning of the shift, yesterday morning, as our library received an award of excellence from the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association. It is the 19th consecutive year that the Hurst Public Library has received that award. Here is the picture, with two of our librarians holding the award.

I’m on the left, behind the lady who chose to keep her mask on. Our director is the tallest person in the photo.

The Texas Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners, last night, 5-1. Jonathan Hernandez (1-0) got the win. Jon Gray pitched well, but was removed from the game before he could qualify for the win. This puts the Rangers at 13-12, back in first place in the AL West, a half game ahead of the Mariners. They are playing right now, as I type, as today’s game began at, I believe, 1:35 CT. It is currently 4-2, Mariners. Andrew Heaney (0-2) started for Texas.

The Boston Red Sox beat the Cleveland Guardians 8-0, last night. Cooper Criswell (1-1) got the win for Boston. This puts them at 14-11, in third place in the AL East, still three games back from the first place Yankees. They, too, are already playing, this afternoon, and the current score is 6-4 Guardians. Chase Anderson (0-0) started for Boston, but only lasted 1.2 innings, giving up five runs.

The Atlanta Braves are back on top of MLB, with a 17-6 record. Two other teams have won 17 games (Cleveland and NY Yankees), but have the Guardians have lost 7 games and the Yankees have lost 8. The Other Sox have now lost 22 games (3-22) and continue to hold down the cellar of MLB. The Minnesota Twins now have the longest current win streak, having won four in a row (this is one category that has the potential to change the most). The Other Sox have lost seven consecutive games. The Diamondbacks continue to hold the most total runs scored, with 149, while the Other Sox only have 56, at the bottom. The Rangers have 119, and the Red Sox have 112. The Guardians have scored 47 more runs than their opponents, while the Other Sox have scored 85 less. Ouch. The Rangers’ differential is +10, and Boston’s is +23.

I should finish reading Daindreth’s Assassin, by Elisabeth Wheatley, today, and then I will move on to my next read, which will be The Guinevere Deception, by Kiersten White.

Let’s see . . . anything else?

Nope! Have a great day!

TTFN, y’all!
